How do I buy materials?

Browse listings and send an enquiry. We get in touch with the supplier straight away and help you both agree the price and haulage. Once it's agreed, BulkYard raises the Waste Transfer Note and VAT invoice — we never take a cut. You pay the supplier directly by bank transfer.

How do I sell materials?

Create an account and list what you've got. When a buyer enquires we get in touch and help you and the buyer agree the price and haulage. BulkYard then handles the digital waste tracking and invoices off the back of the agreed deal — we never take a cut — and can connect you to receiver sites (sites registered to receive surplus material) across the UK.

What does it cost?

Free until October 2026, when digital waste tracking becomes mandatory. Then: it's £4,000 a year to buy, sell or deliver, and £750 a year for hauliers. No commission on materials or haulage.

How do payments work?

Buyers pay suppliers directly by bank transfer (BACS). BulkYard never holds or processes your money. After the deal is agreed and delivered, BulkYard issues a VAT-compliant invoice showing the supplier's bank details.

Who pays for delivery?

Haulage is sorted after an enquiry, once the distance between the two sites is known. You've three options: collect it yourself, have the other party deliver, or ask BulkYard to find haulage quotes from its verified network — we send them over for you and the other party to compare. You decide which to accept and how to share the cost. It's negotiated, never a fixed split. Collection dates are agreed with the buyer or seller to suit both sites.

What if there's a problem with my order?

How do I get verified?

Accepted Answer

Before your first transaction, complete your business profile: company name, registered address, VAT number, and billing email. We need these to create invoices and Waste Transfer Notes. BulkYard uses self-billing — this means we issue VAT-compliant invoices on behalf of suppliers. It's a standard HMRC arrangement that saves you doing your own invoicing.

Is this compliant? What if the Environment Agency (EA) asks for records?

Every transaction is documented – material type, quantity, collection details, and delivery confirmation. Your audit trail is built in. No more digging through filing cabinets when someone asks where material came from. All records retained for 6 years per HMRC requirements.

How much can I save on landfill tax?

Landfill tax for inert materials rose from £4.05/tonne to £8.65/tonne in April 2026 - and increases every year. Every tonne you sell or reuse through BulkYard is a tonne that doesn't go to tip. That saves you disposal costs, gate fees, and admin time.

We operate across England, Scotland and Wales, with the strongest coverage in South Wales, the South West and the West Midlands — Cardiff, Bristol and Birmingham, along the M4 and M5. Local suppliers offer the best prices thanks to lower transport costs.

BulkYard gets in touch with buyers and suppliers, helps the two parties agree a price, then raises the Waste Transfer Note and VAT invoice off the back of the agreed deal. We verify every company's identity through Companies House and record haulier waste carrier licence declarations. We never take a cut: the buyer pays the seller directly by bank transfer, and haulage is agreed between the parties.
